Disquiet Junto Project 0771: Phase Incident The Assignment: Celebrate Steve Reich’s 90th birthday. I started this out to explore if I could do a phase shifting piece using hardware synths. The basic composition was done on a Digitakt II. I hooked it up in Ableton Live to quickly explore some ideas... and decided I liked what I was adding... so the piece is a hybrid of what can be done live with a hardware sequencer, with added sounds and MIDI processing in Ableton Live. This uses a similar technique that Reich uses in many of his works (like Clapping Music and Music for Pieces of Wood): A common phrase is played in two instruments, one constant, and the other shifting by a 1/16th note every few measures. However, here, because of the way the sequencer works, this shifting instrument actually starts a 1/16th early every 8 measures. This gives a subtly different effect than the Reich style at the transition points, as here you get a sort of "lead-in" effect. Another aspect is that in addition to two percussive tracks playing each line (one pair fixed, one pair shifting), a synth is playing the combined patten on a single pitch throughout. Otherwise, aside from varying the filter of the synth... I left all other sonic aspects static so that the effect of the phase shifting is the most prominent.
