While I had played a few other modular instruments before, the Serge presented an open clarity, without presumptions that immediately resonated with me. It quickly became my main instrument. I like use the Serge to build complex sonic systems, rather than distinct voices. This work, for example has several parts, but they all have some level of interconnected patching. For this patch, I primarily used my favorite module: The Dual Transient Generator. These modules are so amazingly flexible, capable of a wide variety of timing from rhythmic to tones. Notice in this patch that the audio oscillator remains unpatched. The approach was based on this week's Disquiet Junto's instruction to "Produce a piece of alchemy-inspired music that explores the concepts of “transformation” and “separation” as you interpret them". First each word is sliced into starting and ending sounds - and those are separated in time. Then again, each part is separated into high and low frequencies, again separated in time. Things are multiplied by echos along the way. The track was produced entirely in Ableton Live, and the video in Davinci Resolve. In 2016 I composed the theme music for Google's Tech Talk video series. This work deconstructs the opening music as follows: The four opening bars are divided into puzzle pieces by keeping only the notes in one beat of each 4/4 measure. In each puzzle piece, each of the four musical parts gets one of the four beats. There are four puzzle pieces, heard at the begining, then pieces 1&3 played together, then 2&4 together, and finally the full work (with the ending 5th measure). The video illustrates this process. This experiment was both part of my Jamuary collection, and for the Disquiet Junto #0629. It was a challenge to make the bass parts stand distinct without being able to shape the other two parts... but I did my best. I also added a kick. I shamelessly admit that I got the idea from reading @DeDe's write up of their own treatment of the same pair of tracks. (Didn't listen yet to keep myself ignorant by what is surely a fantastic bass track!) I resisted the temptation to muck with the two original parts, but I did use the original full-stereo version of Just Percussion, and then I panned it and rightward somewhat left and right, not hard. You should still be able to keep the parts distinct as you listen.
